You might be better off buying a hardtail that will come with better parts for right around the same price, maybe even a bit cheaper.

You can usually get really good deals on Jamis hardtails (like the Komodo 3) that are 2006 or 2007 models. Under $1k and full hydro brakes, good fork, and a mix of LX and XT drivetrain parts.
