A few month ago I was contacted about a url I control. It was going to expire and this company wanted to buy it off of me. I didnt want to sell, so I renewed it and they wrote me a very nasty letter about renewing so close to the deadline for renewal when they wanted the site, bla bla bla.

I dont know how companys like that stay in business but the bottom line is if you want a domain, either buy it from whoever has it, or play the waiting game. The waiting game pays off more often then not, in my experience. Companys like the ones you were contacted with make thier money off of people who dont know what thier doing in the first place, and hence, almost deserve to pay 100 times what the domain is worth in the first place..
