Appearing a bit crazy can actually help in establishing contact with patients. The more people feel they need to maintain a front to appear normal, the more they will lie about symptoms. If the psychiatrist himself seems to be as vulnerable as the patients themselves are, there's a chance that they'll open up far more than they would otherwise, and reveal things they'd normally consider "too crazy" to tell others.
