I do not know that an admissions office will verify something like that over the phone. Maybe if you send them a verification letter with company letterhead showing the person applied for a job.
I know before I was self employed, I used to have to sign a waiver that allowed a background check, including verifying college information. I do not know if it is mandatory, and such things seem to vary from company and state.
But I know when I worked in telco, I had to sign that all three times.
