When I was a kid.. we were all at the dinner table eating dinner and a guy tried to walk right in the house. Luckily my mom was a paranoid door locker even way back then (1970's). When she went to the door and confronted him. He tried to say he was selling something. Sorry. You don't try turning the knob and then jiggling it to try to force it open when you're selling something.
She called the cops, but by the time they got there, he was long gone.
