What I liked about Russia is they went "green" way before the term was coined. Most Russians also own Dachas. This is a small country home where they raise all their (water is free) vegetables or just relax. The land was given to them by the government to do what they want. Plus they don't have to pay property tax. For an American this was just way too hard to understand.
Purchasing Guns in the US can be a political statement. When you buy a gun in America a document is sent to the Federal government. This could send a clear message you're not happy with whatever. All politician follow gun sales data.

It's also possible Americans are buying guns because they are tired of all the bullshit that politicians send their way and how they favor big guys (banks, insurance companies, oil companies and other large industry) yet they forgot to bailout the small guy who needs help as well.
Maybe some Americans figured that the way to stop these same politicians from lieing to them anymore is by killing the motherfuckers and starting fresh with new faces, ideas and policies.
