i think you are making the "positive effect" up. the only positive benefit is population control. i can't imagine any other accepted scientific theories as to what positive role homosexuality plays in any animal species as it pertains to their evolution and survival.
Homosexuality is extremely common throughout the animal kingdom. It isn't a human specific trait. The sheer size of the population in not only our species but others shows that it has had some evolutionary benefit. We don't know for sure what that is and may never know. But the fact it has survived to this point in such large numbers shows that it did play a beneficial role.

Some believe that the demeanor of homosexuals are beneficial to society. That being less aggressive, there was a better chance that they would survive. That their demeanor was more attractive to women and even beneficial to males in the group. Sexuality isn't black or white and is a lot more complex than we realize. Homosexuals reproduce.

Nonetheless, marriage isn't about reproduction. It's about some tax benefits, patient rights, and heir rights. We often look at legal marriage as something more but it isn't. It's simply a legal classification. A Church has every right to discriminate in my opinion whether I think it's right or wrong. But I don't believe our government has that same right.

Here's a nice piece on the topic. Ton of other scientific studies out there about evolution and homosexuality.
