It's actually not that easy. I mean, it is. It's a case of willpower, but there are things playing against him.
It sounds as if you are insulin resistant... This means that when you have a carb or a sugar... your body floods itself with glucose... and you crave even more, sooner.
Do you gain all your weight to your midsection, but are smaller elsewhere?
Ways to combat insulin resistance... Have smarter forms of sugar... and say if you eat a handful of chocolate chips.. and say that's 32g's of sugar... then you need to have two low calorie cheese sticks of 14g's of protein to balance it out.
For every 14g's of sugar you ingest... you need to be having AT LEAST 7g's of protein...
This is a great way to battle insulin resistance.. or "syndrome x"... by balancing them out. The protein means you won't be hungry as quickly.. and the protein also helps how your body digests the sugar.. keeps your glucose levels from spiking...
I don't know what a good subsitute is.. but I know you can add in some protein to your diet and maybe have the same energy.. without the cravings
Just google "IR Diet"
When I did this.. I lost approximately 6-8 inches off my midsection ;) and was really, really, happy

It's just a bitch to stick with.
