I've pulled enough sales over the years off 'free blogs' that I could buy a house with the earnings. This isn't 'instead' of sales or traffic to my own domains, but in addition to it. Of course you try to use respected ones, and ones run buy people or businesses you feel you can trust to leave your stuff, but I've had no issues.
It takes minutes (or pennies) to set up some free sites like this, and really, its foolish to not utilize things like this to push link power into your own sites. Making your own sites stronger.
