Having gone through a similiar situation lately with our youngest daughter, I'd say you did the right thing - hell, I would've taken it farther. Hands around your daughter's throat indicates anger management issues and is just the start of further potential abuse.
I don't put up with anyone who lays a hand on a woman - no matter the circumstances. No excuses or second chances.
Fortunately in my situation, my daughters BF didn't physically abuse her...but smacked a wall with his fist next to her head. That was enough for me. I told him if he layed a single hand on her in the future - he'd be hospitalized and taking his meals intravenously.
Spare the consequences. Family is family and should be protected at all cost.
