I can tell you for sure that a lot of regular porn purchasers actually like the process of sifting through tube sites and tgp's. It's part of their ritual. I used to track user behavior very carefully and many times people would find what they are going to get off to, bookmark it, look around for a while and come back to it to finish the deal.

IMO the quality, amount of content "within a single shoot", and frequent updates is the only things that gets em. here's why: Usually people have a trigger mechanism that is a coupling of genetics and learned behavior (basically the niche or fetish they are into) but also studies have been done that show that fantasies are usually tied to a story (for example the surfer imagines circumstances where he is actually able to fuck this girl or that the girl in the porn is someone he knows) but it somehow ties in to reality. Therefore depending on his trigger, he can be stimulated by a specific girl, a look, a fetish, an act, etc. With that said, if there was a site with the volume and variability of a tube site, but the quality (and consistency) of a good paysite, here are a few examples of sites/networks that have it right:
DirtyD
Meatholes
Cumonherface.com

So in my opinion the way to win this game is to have large quantities of quality content organized into categories and specific shoots (so once the person finds their trigger, they have enough to look through), and regular updates (every 2-3 days) so they know they'll get more.

You cannot really stick strictly to a specific fetish and think you have it covered because people have different triggers and while you may have the niche down pat, you cannot always have the story. So within a niche you need as much variability as possible in girls, surroundings, and circumstances of your content.

A much larger investment is needed these days mostly because of the content separation if you think about it. Back in the day, the TGP's and the paysites only differed in the amount of content per shoot that was offered. In a tgp you would get 9 pics, and on the site you'd get 100. That's it.
