I use Acronis True Image to make backup images of my OS drive from time to time, and it also includes a HD wipe tool that's quite robust. If you don't want the data on a drive to be recoverable, you pick one of many encryption schemes, some have more passes than others, and they write/rewrite data to the drive with each pass.
The 1's and 0's someone mentioned above is an option I believe.
