i bought a mouse not long ago and the pin connector thingy wouldn't snap in - so i used my tried and trued method of just continuuing to jam it in until it submits - i ended up with a completely mangled useless mouse.

Haha I hear you! I've had 2 self built pcs but both of them were built by someone other than myself for those same reasons.
If you want something custom then take a look at that place posted up there or do a search locally for computer shops in your area.
I just like Tiger Direct cause they seem to have the high end and low end covered and if you have enough time you can find a nice computer for what you are looking for. Another nice thing about them is their "factory refurbished pcs". These are not year old pieces of junk that cleaned up and re sold. They are new smelling machines that run as great as the ones that are brand new for a lot less money.
I've ordered stuff from other places like amazon too but you have to be careful cause a lot of the stuff they sell is not from "amazon" but other retailers and some of them are fly by night places that will put your stuff on backorder after you've already paid for it. I buy my blue rays from Amazon cause they are from amazon and i can get them overnighted.
I just like Tiger Direct cause I've bought things from them 15-20 times and not once did anything come later then they said it would or have i had to return anything due to being faulty.
