You need to use unofficial firmware to get usb ethernet and wireless networking working for the WDTV
Using this method you don't need to have a usb hdd but you need a usb thumb drive to load the firmware.

Check the link below for which adapters are supported and the WDTV wiki has the rest of the tools/tutorials.
