I think that all depends on the ink that is used, placement on the body and how you take care of it. I have a tat with red in it and it still looks very vibrant after over 10 years. I did keep it well hydrated when healing and is also on the inside of my arm so it doesn't get a lot of exposure to the sun.
Partially true - however 10 years isn't overly long. My oldest tat is nearly twenty and its lost the red hues. But its on the outside bicep and gets a lot of sun exposure.

A lot has to do with the type of skin, also.
