I think a few bad apples using Smart Thumb used exploits. I remember cruising Google for key phrases and would come across TGPs that would lock you in until you clicked or download something. The site would eventually die a quick death but another would pop right back up with these exploits.
Google's algorithm couldn't keep up because Google bot would be re-directed to a clean version of the site. My theory is that Google did a manual manipulation of its search algorithm to throw back sites using Smart Thumbs. The bad apples using Smart Thumbs cause this Google backlash.
or I could be completely wrong....

You could be but you ain't!
This non-sense about the back link to smart thumbs causing a problem is bullshit,
especially considering that smart thumbs still comes up #1 on the first page.

Holy shit! Smart thumbs is way down to 4th on the 1st page for "tgp script"
So if google thinks the back link is spam then why penalize the site/message board
that got spammed and not the domain being spammed?
The other option would be that smart thumbs is using an SEO method that google
has decided to penalize. Add in some spammy sites and that's enough.
