From the 80's, he took it to an incredibly different level, there is no doubt. But he also experienced success as a member of the Jackson 5, and it was in 1967 that they won the competition at the Apollo and subsequently got signed by Motown.
Michael was 9 then. And the J5 got to be huge in pop music in the 70's. I remember that, because I am old as dirt.
So he is something that we very rarely ever see. Matter of fact, I can't think of anyone else that was both a child star and an adult star. (edit: Maybe Elizabeth Taylor? I don't know her story, but I think she was pretty young in National Velvet) In essence, he lived almost his entire life in the public eye.
I wouldn't wish that on my worst enemy.
