I don't think this has anything to do with proving that he wants the job, it's about proving that he is capable of doing the job to begin with. If you are trying to hire a programmer, aren't you going to ask to see his work first?
It's clear Dave is not a talent agent. He isn't going to run a casting couch and watch 30 guys jerking off in a booth every day. If this guy wants to work for Dave's company he will have to do whatever Dave says.
