If we're all going to define words according to our own personal belief system, why bother with written or spoken language at all? Under any definition I've read, golfers are athletes. Below are the definitions of athlete by two respected dictionaries, what criteria do golfers (or curlers, rock climbers, or skiiers for that matter) fail to meet?

Random House Dictionary:

ath⋅lete  [ath-leet]

"a person trained or gifted in exercises or contests involving physical agility, stamina, or strength; a participant in a sport, exercise, or game requiring physical skill."

American Heritage Dictionary:

ath·lete (āth'lēt')

"a person possessing the natural or acquired traits, such as strength, agility, and endurance, that are necessary for physical exercise or sports, especially those performed in competitive contexts."
