if you get too many false positives you can turn down the heusteristic detection level, false positives are a play off against detection of unknown viruses, it's up to you but i've never found it a problem.
as far as being what some blog "told me to think" here's some results

http://www.av-test.org/ who i'm guessing have a little more knowledge on AV testing than you. out of that list of AV programs, avira came top for malware detection.
so what do you advise as the best?
