if you get too many false positives you can turn down the heusteristic detection level, false positives are a play off against detection of unknown viruses, it's up to you but i've never found it a problem.
as far as being what some blog "told me to think" here's some results http://www.virusbtn.com/news/2008/09_02 compiled by independant AV testers http://www.av-test.org/ who i'm guessing have a little more knowledge on AV testing than you. out of that list of AV programs, avira came top for malware detection.

The most important ability in a security software, is the proactive ability. And AVIRA is simply not a secure software. In most cases it wont find the malware before the client PC is compromiced.
Avast is a good free alternative, and the only free anti-virus software I would reccomend people to install. But if you want a secure program, you need to pay
