Nothing at all wrong with "trust but verify." The problem in dealing with crackpots is that they will not accept answers for their questions. Show them the birth certificate they so eagerly want to see, they'll say it's a fake. Prove it's real, they'll say there's been a conspiracy since his birth to ordain him as the Communist/Socialist/fillintheblank shadow President. And it just goes on and on.
