To add, Eddie needs to show how said liable and slander caused him damage monetarily. "Emotional distress" damages wont fly.
You need money to sue someone civily. Small claims is under $5500, you can represent yourself. But i assume you want to take Joe to the cleaners right? Unless you have an AZ. Bar number i dont see you addressing any court of law. So your option would be to retain an attorney who's retainer will start out at $2500 and he will string you along till you pay him 20k. Then after all that money you will still need to show how his defaming and slanderous statements affected you monetarily.
Can you quantify the damage Eddie? Really? you saying you have been damaged is not enough dude! You will need to hire a forensic accountant out of your own pocket to help you figure out your losses due to Joes naughty statements.

On the criminal end of the law, the said written threat has to be a credible threat that will get held to a reasonable person standard "could this guy really carry out this threat?".
The answer is no. Joe lives in LA and Eddie lives in AZ. Anyone who knows Joe, knows that he isnt gonna spend the money to fly out to AZ to wHoop Eddies ass with a hockey stick.
If i was the one that made the threat to Eddie, he would have a lot stronger case, because if you ever ask any of my friends or people who really know me if i would carry out my threats they would all say "fuck yea he would".
So in conclusion on the bad side, Eddie has shit for his criminal complaint and shit for his civil complaint. On the bright side he doesn't have me out trying to get him. lol
