Since the bible contradicts itself in numerous places, it's quite easy for the religious to pick whatever they want from it.
And either way, most Christians merely use the Bible to support their own, traditional beliefs. Jesus mentions homosexuality and abortion a grand total of 0 times, and poverty several thousands of times. And yet, the religious right tend to focus their energies exactly on those things not mentioned at all.
