The "barrier" crashes similar to this (you've all seem them, front impact barrier tests) only simulate a car of equal size hitting it. In this case, an object of 0 velocity; and you'd probably lose your legs in that crash.
I was lead to believe early on that the smart cars were "safe" due to these tests, but they're not the whole truth. More recent tests put a Smart car up against a mid-size or SUV -- in those crashes you're getting seriously hurt or killed.
