I have two close friends who were late in life "surprises" when their parents didn't think they could still have kids, as was my fiancee, and I was primarily raised by my grandparents. We are all very well adjusted.

Personally, having a very young mother, I think older adults make better parents.

I feel, especially in today's society, haivng a child in your 40's is pretty acceptable. The only thing that concerns me with older mothers is the risk of down syndrome. Once you pass 50 then new issues are raised, such as can a 70 year old adequately parent an adolescent / teenager, or life expectancy - will the parent reasonably be around long enough to see the child through to adulthood.
