I think they're right. The evidence in the case was incredibly weak, lots of information was withheld during the trial, there are numerous rumors and statements about witnesses being offered bribes to testify, etc.
Personally, I think it's fairly likely that the identities of those actually responsible were kept hidden, perhaps to aid the search for their other associates.
