Ignoring that paradox, it also could never work on any practical level if you actually try to think though the mechanics of about 2% of the population attempting to forcefully confiscate hundreds of millions of guns from the other 98%. I hate to generalize, but... generally speaking the type of people who go in to the military are sheep willing to follow or idealistic people who think they can make a difference. The first group out-numbers the second by far.

Taking away the guns from the sheep isn't the problem you have to deal with, it's taking the guns away from the idealists that is. And of course when you have the sheep on your side, you just need to send them out to get the guns from the rest in the name of patriotism and the common good.
