I think Cameron's aim was to make a movie completely in CG and look indistinguishable from reality.
I think he failed in the action scenes...it looks like a video game cut-scene. But the other stuff, with the human characters in casual settings looks real as anything. As a CG artist myself, I was seriously impressed with those shots.
