It should also be mentioned that just backlinks on any site in any part of the page are not really worth the effort with google either.
Links from relevant websites in the content or an article will do a hell of alot more for your promotion.

I?ve been taking the Google seminars and you are correct. Content and relevance is the key to better rankings with Google. As ?location, location, location? is to real estate, ?relevance, relevance, relevance? is the key to Google. Google has a mission when it comes to serving its customers. If your site aids Google?s mission, it will rank high. Fuck with Google and Google will fuck you.
