With bad cases of vitiligo, the best treatment IS to de-pigment the remaining areas of "normal" skin. It takes a LONG time (multiple years) of 2-3 times per day application of medicated lotion, so it's usually only done on parts of the body that are regularly visible.

It's just a shame that Michael Jackson didn't come out about it when it started happening, it's a disorder that's really psychologically painful for those who have it (I know someone who does). Someone of his stature coming out about it could've raised a lot of awareness about the disorder, while desensitizing the public to it.
