Last December I bought a paper shredder. It was a higher end home type, but more than sufficient for my needs.
Today I noticed the on lamp was off and nothing I could do was making it come back on. I attempted to go online to check out what the warranty might be (figuring it had to be at least a year) but it asked for a model number and I could not see one.
I made a little extra effort and found a toll free support number [and no model number], so I figured what the heck and gave them a call. They answered almost immediately.
The girl was helpful in her suggestions but nothing was working. I gave her all the serial numbers, date and place purchased, then she started asking questions.
"How often do you oil it?"
"Well, maybe three times since I got it, but this is a power issue, not shredding."
"You mentioned you did not see the light on. Do you leave this on all the time?"
"Yes."
"Not plugged in, but on, so whenever you drop paper in it shreds."
"Yeah."
Then she started telling me about how this shredder should not be used more than 7 minutes at a time, and turned off when not using, yada yada as I watched my warranty fly out the window.
Then she said, "I am going to replace it anyway."
I was sure I voided it and was willing to accept the consequences. This act has made me decide that I will always look at
Fellowes over the competition from now on.
