Although I believe this is a hoax there is obvious reasons to have traps on a farm. If you are a city dweller then you clearly wouldn't know. Coyotes is one big reason or any other scavenger/predator. Even catching small game or pests that eat at gardens or spread disease, etc.
As for the last two questions.... That came instantly to my mind too when they said it must have been highly intelligent.
