Pandemic influenza 'mock-up' vaccines
The availability of vaccines in the event of an outbreak of pandemic influenza is essential for the protection of the public from the disease.
To facilitate the approval of pandemic vaccines, the European Commission and the EMEA have worked together to develop a novel approach that allows a mock-up vaccine to be authorised in advance of an actual pandemic outbreak.
A mock-up vaccine is a vaccine that mimics the future pandemic influenza vaccine in terms of its composition, manufacturing and control. However, instead of the pandemic influenza virus strain (which is unknown before the outbreak), the mock-up vaccine contains a strain of the influenza virus that has been specifically chosen because the population is immunologically naïve to it (i.e. has never been exposed to it).
In the event of an influenza pandemic, the marketing-authorisation holder of the mock-up vaccine can submit additional data as a variation, to introduce the actual pandemic strain of the virus.
