My neighbor is gay and one afternoon we were talking and I asked him if he ever asked a guy out he thought was gay only to find out the guy wasn't. He said it has happened a few times, but they mostly just turn him down and there is no drama. He did end up going out with a guy once and it sounds like a similar situation. The guy he was out with thought they were just hanging out as friends and had no idea he was on a date with a dude.
