For super straight hair with no wave, you may need some hair product such as a heat-hardening gel to hold the crimp or it will fall out before you are done shooting.

For wavy or curly hair, you don't really need the product, but it has to be blow dried straight first. For hair with an extremely strong curl, it needs to be flat ironed and then crimped, after blow drying. My hair, for example, would take three steps like that.
