I was once trying to get some more IPs, so I went to all of the top search engine
experts asking them to tell me why more IPs would help me with the search engines.
All of the experts said it doesn't a bit. You don't want to use the same IP as some
egregious spammer, but all of the SE experts said it's perfectly fine to have all of your
sites on the same IP. I asked some more probing questions, trying to find some
reason that I needed more IPs, but the people who would know all said it didn't matter.
I talked to leading SEO experts and to the technical staff from the SEs themselves.
As CaroMark indicated, IPs are in short supply, so I'd save your IP requests for when
you truly need them.
I hope the poster doesn't take personal offense, but this one comment is just
so completely wrong in so many ways that I had to post the correct information:

Think about that for a second - the HTML on one server and the images on another.
If EITHER ONE goes down the site is fucked. That just doubles your chance for
problems because problems with either host make the site useless. What good is
a porn site that's just HTML and no pictures? No good at all. Of course that also
causes more administrative hassle - you have two log into two different hosts just
to edit one page. Much better from a reliability standpoint and much less hassle is to
put some SITES on one server and another SITE on another server, but keep each
site together, so a whole site is up as long as one server is up.
Also bandwidth wise that idea makes no sense whatever. A typical HTML page
is maybe 4K of HTML with 100K+ of graphics and other "binaries". Storing that 4K,
the HTML, somewhere else isn't going to make the page load any faster - it's only
the 100K+ of images that are going to take any time at all to load.
In fact, if you carefully watch your browser status bar, you'll see it typically takes
longer looking up the DNS then it does retrieving the HTML. By using two domain
names, you double the time required for DNS lookups and make your site slower.
There are other problems and hassles caused by spreading media that way which
come up in different situations, but we've covered enough for now. For now it's
enough to point out that putting html and one server and media on another is
slower, less reliable, and more hassle. (Security issues are another reason).
