NBA contracts are guaranteed for their entire length.
NFL contracts may include a signing bonus or other bonus,
which is guaranteed, but are paid week-to-week through the season.
After the sixth game (or something like that) then the team is
responsible for paying that year's entire contract.
They also sometimes negotiate a settlement when a player is injured and released.
