I completely agree that everyone should form their own opinions of people, both in their personal and business dealings. It may be wise to be aware of others' advice, but, in the end, you need to make decisions based upon your experience with an individual.
For example, if I based my opinions of people off this message board, I wouldn't deal or talk to 95% of those found here. Of that remaining 5%, I might think they are solid people due to their positive reputation but 4 out of 5 would be willing to screw you over for a nickel.
I read people quite well. There are a few times, where I have pre-judged people only to change my stance once I got to know them better. Consider it luck if you wish, but overall in my lifetime I can pretty much say I have never really been screwed over by anyone.
That said, I also think the following analogy may apply: if your current girlfriend cheated on her ex but (as far as you know) hasn't cheated on you; the fact remains, she still might cheat on you.
Lastly to sum up the people in this thread:
Dan - I met you many years ago and consider you one of the more "straight" guys I've met through this business. That puts you among a limited number. If you ever do need help that I may be able to lend a hand with, don't hesitate to ask. Hopefully I'll be up there in Montreal this December
J.F. - I don't know you much at all, so haven't formed any opinion yet. I've heard both sides about you, on one hand I have heard about things you have done in the past to people (not talking about just Scott here) I know well and trust. On the other hand, you have Dan praising you here for being a good guy and helping him and his family out. Thus, I reserve judgement until such a time as I get to know you better.
Scott - At first, you are probably one of those I "pre-judged" and didn't like at all. However, hanging out a bit at our Costa Rica Bash I learned you were very different than your board persona and not an obnoxious asshole at all. You fit in those rare categories where I do change an opinion after getting to know someone better.
To conclude my little diatribe, the bitching back and forth in this thread is just making all involved look pretty childish IMO
