That's what cracks me up. People don't realize how much corporate greed is at the center of the Apple story. The reason they don't own the PC market is because they never wanted to give up anything and be open the way PCs and Windows are. Not to mention, if Apple owned the PC market, computer technology would be about 10 years behind what it is today. The open architecture of the PC is what caused the whole computer technology boom. Tons of different companies can always move an industry faster than one, which is what Apple wants.
I do give Apple an ENORMOUS amount of credit for they way they branded themselves and their advertising campaigns are second to none in the industry. But they are about as "corporate" as you can get.
Unfortunately, they are making the same dumb play with smartphones as they did with PCs. By keeping the iphone and iphone apps all under one roof, they will slowly become a niche player in the smartphone market, just like what happened with PCs. Eventually, the smartphone will be like PCs and Microsoft will run the software underneath for most of them with tons of apps and an open architecture that lets anyone build a phone.
Apple was the original mainstream PC, then they got greedy, didn't want open architecture, and became a niche player. They are doing the same with the smartphone.
