I'm from Chicago and can echo the sentiments that yes, there are some very fine schools there (and yes, Stevenson is one of them).
Part of the problem right now in Chicago, is that many schools have been closed due to budget cuts/resources etc. And, kids are being bused to other schools outside of their area, which creates a situation where rival gangs (yea, i guess gang kids go to school or whatever) come into contact with each other more frequently.
Either way, the problem isn't just the kids. It's the fucking parents and community leaders who need to step up and do something. Activities with kids, after school reading programs etc. It's not the government's job to make these people stop killing each other. And yes, while Arne Duncan was an excellent administrator of Chicago schools, I'm sure he has more important things to do right now...
