Who suggested it was? In this country, when we come up with new sports, we tend to use a new word to describe that sport. This is why rugby isn't called football. It's BECAUSE IT'S RUGBY.

i'm not the slightest bit confused, my good man. it appears the confusion lies with you if you believe this thread displays american's view of themselves

moreover, your confusion is compounded by the fact the rugby is short for the sport known as rugby FOOTBALL.
like american football (gridiron football), the name has been shortened to simply, rugby.

we shortened the name to football, because calling it gridiron or american would not make much sense, i suppose.
