Grab a copy of a sample LSAT and you'll be able to judge for yourself how hard the first step is (getting in to law school). Some people find the logic problem/'games' to be nigh impossible, while others seem have a natural aptitude for them. To me, that was the hardest part of the LSAT; the rest is no harder than any other standardized scholastic aptitude exam, really.
By all accounts, law school itself can be pretty brutal, particularly if you also have to work to support yourself during the three year program.
Once you've made it through that fun, then you get to the bar exam. Some people sail through on their first attempt, others (including some people that do quite well during law school) have to take it several times before they succeed, and some never do pass the bar.
Of course, you can always move to Washington or New York, the two states where you can still forgo law school if you're able to demonstrate competence in the law... but from what I've heard, that process is really no easier (or faster) than going through law school.
