Most of our Industry sells people directly, they offer no social love, support or a true connection to the product or company. No interaction from the affiliate to the surfer, or many paysite owners to the buyer.
This isn't just Online Porn - it's online EVERYTHING. Every single corner of the Internet is falling were direct marketing is applied. You can build any niche you want, mainstream or porn. Getting traffic is easy, converting it sales is hard.
Until you stop direct selling them and start providing and filling needs/wants/desires of people, creating personal connections with them. People will beg to be sold when they 'think' they have a connection with you.
But I can see from all the Twitter is stupid threads, that the majority of us simply don't get it.

Newspapers and magazines did not lose sales because of social interaction, the internet was just cheaper. No printing, instant updates, easy access, etc.
If you want to find a job or a used car, just go online, and find classifieds... instantly.
The internet just makes more sense, with less overhead - like online porn vs going to your local video rental store to rent DVDs. It is much easier, and less embarrassing.
Porn sold online because people liked porn. It was always recession-proof, because people liked and wanted the taboo treat that is porn.
Now porn is free, and the industry only has itself to blame. The age-old question, why buy the cow when the milk is free, comes to mind.
Everyone who can't see that adult is clearly eating itself, make statements like, you need to change and evolve. Of course that is true with all business, but tell me how the LARGEST online porn companies have changed.
Reality Kings for example, sells porn memberships. Now they utilize more tubes and blogs than before, but they still make thier money from online porn memberships. The only difference is that now they likely make much less profit than they did 5 years ago, like almost ALL adult websites.
Say whatever you want, but as long as a product is free, it will not sell as well as a product that is locked down.
When a liquor store offers a free wine tasting they allow their customers to "sample" their wines, in hopes of selling bottles and cases of same. They do not give away bottles and cases to boost sales, but that is now what the people in adult are doing... giving everything away for free.
