There is always a happy medium.

Will has a good point that when the getting is good the truly successful get after it. The less motivated use it as yet another excuse to take some additional time off.

However family time is important, especially in the early years. It's a cheesy saying but you can never get those times back, no matter how much you make.

You can still work a ton of hours and spend time with your family. It's just setting priorities. Working in this industry is a luxury in the fact that its mostly work spent from home. Meaning you can get up early, work, take time off and get the kids to school, work until they get home, help them with homework and eat dinner with the fam, tuck them in and then work at night. You can work more hours and have more family time then if you had to work a regular 9-5.
