Movie called Selena, based on the "first female" Latin American (Mexican) cross over star. Selena was just getting huge in the US and was already HUGE in Mexico. Jennifer Lopez took the risk (even as a mostly unknown or B grade actress) to star in it. Issue was it was almost a musical since it had tons of singing in it. Anyways it made her think she could sing, plus she did well in the movie.
No airplane crash though, she was shot by her friend and fan club president who was embezzling cash from the family.
