The Mayan Prophecies are among the most misinterpreted and distorted since those of a Jewish carpenter with whom we're all familiar.
They don't predict the end of the world, they predict the end of an age. Astrologers, hippies and new age-y types call the coming age the Age of Aquarius. The age that's ending is the Age of Pisces.
What exactly is going to happen is unsure, but one interpretation is that with a galactic alignment (which is actually going to happen) the energy bombarding the earth will be different and thus affect consciousness on the planet. A cosmic kick in the ass if you will. No doubt most of us could use it.
