My Canon timer is busted but it still functions as a remote release by plugging it in, then unplugging it sometime later.
It's practically impossible to meter over 30 seconds accurately, so that's why nothing goes over.

Yeah, you'll need a remote release and throw it in bulb mode. Neither hard nor expensive. Stick it on F5.6 - F8, open it up, have a few beers and close the shutter when you remember it 2 hours later :D
