Yeah, you'll need a remote release and throw it in bulb mode. Neither hard nor expensive. Stick it on F5.6 - F8, open it up, have a few beers and close the shutter when you remember it 2 hours later :D

I do test shots at ISO1600 then drop back down to 200 or 100 and adjust the exposure time (8X and 16X) accordingly.
It was more fun on slide film, you had to use intuition and experience to decide on an appropriate exposure... or sit on your bum while you manually bracket shots. ;)
Then there's the lone car headlights at 2am or the sky clouding over at 4:15am to ruin your careful planning...
