This is just a guess, it probably has something to do with ski's being measured in cm's and the early manufactures wanted to cross market to skiers. Also, Burton set up a European division pretty early during the development of the sport. It wouldn't make sense to start a new sport in Europe and Japan measuring the product in feet and inches.
